The Voice of God

"I'm sorry. All I ever do is hurt people."

Like all members of the Sohma family who have the zodiac curse, Kureno is, or rather was, attached to Akito Sohma, the god of the zodiac. From the moment of Akito's conception Kureno felt a bond to her. He dreamed of her and woke up in tears of joy. This bond is one of the most incomprehensible things to those who aren't members of the zodiac. It prevents those with the curse from acting directly against their god and forces them to obey her will. When Kureno's curse was broken so was the supernatural bond to his god and he was set adrift.

The moment the curse broke Kureno and Akito's relationship was no longer one built on an intangible bond and instead became built on personal feelings. Kureno was no longer bound to follow Akito and was instead set adrift. Akito, a girl who had always been surrounded by those who were bound to follow her was suddenly faced with the prospect of losing something that she felt was hers. It only makes sense that Akito would cry and beg Kureno not to leave. She was still a little girl. Kureno on the other hand was lost without the curse that had controlled his life. Before he had the other zodiac members and his god, and now he was alone.

Kureno willingly dedicated himself to Akito in an effort to feel connected again and to make her happy. At some point along the way he let his own desires fall to the wayside. He isolated himself from the rest of the family at her request. He lived for her, and loved for her, and when she asked him to he, he even began a sexual relationship with her despite a lack of serious romantic connection to her.

"You shouldn't do things like that. It doesn't matter who you are. There are things in this life that you should and shouldn't do." - Kureno to Akito

At some point during the long years Kureno's relationship began to hold Akito back. Unlike the others, he was no longer bound to follow her whims and yet he did so without question in an effort to appease her. Kureno's decision to bend to her every whim left her with no reason to take accountability for her cruelty. He made her happy but it was at the expense of others. When Kureno realized how his inaction nearly led to the death of one of the other zodiac members, Rin, Kureno finally realized the consequences of his inaction.

Kureno stood up to Akito and got stabbed in the process. He didn't blame her though and in fact seemed to blame himself. As if it were the natural result of his failure to act in time. He could have stood up to her but his promise to make her happy and not leave prevented him from doing what was best for the both of them. Their relationship was probably one of the only relationships that was not built on the curse or the duty to her as head of the family.

For Kureno, Akito was a both a ship and an anchor. She reached out to him when he found himself adrift after his curse was broken. His promise to remain by her side kept him caged, as trapped as any member of the zodiac despite having the ability to leave at any time. It wasn't until he realized that it was holding them both back that the two of them were able to love even if it meant severing their bond.
