Clumsy and Kind

"I'm sorry. All I ever do is hurt people."

Kureno is described as being similar to Tohru in that they are both clumsy and kind. It's Tohru's friend Uotani who describes him like this after he goes to the convenience store she works at and spills everything. While on a base level this is true Kureno's personality is not nearly as chipper or bright as Tohru's and it gives the reader a very different impression.

Kureno rarely smiles outside of his few meetings with Uotani. Instead he walks around with a forlorn and distant glance. Even when he's in Akito's presence he looks distant and forlorn. He is often quiet and serious among his family members as is expected of him. He rarely talks or stands up for himself and when he does voice exception he does so in a quiet stern manner.

While Kureno presents a confident front when speaking on Akito's behalf as her aide he is very different when speaking for himself. He believes that he hurts people because of the decisions he made as a child but remains set in his decision. He often blames himself for Akito's actions because of his inability or unwillingness to act against her.

Kureno is selfless. That is what led him to the decision to remain by Akito's side even when his curse was broken and his bond to her along with it. He becomes Akito's lover at her request because he believed it would make her happy regardless of his own feelings.

He rescues Rin from imprisonment despite it being none of his business what Akito chose to do with her. He stands up against Akito's actions even though he knows it is likely to end with Akito becoming violent against him. Even when Akito stabs him he forgives her and shows only concern for her well-being rather than his own. His decision to leave the family compound was even made for selfless reasons because he wanted Akito to grow without him there to hold her back.
